North Carolina lands Demarcus Henry as first 2027 pledge

Demarcus Henry committed to North Carolina on Friday, giving Michael Malone his first pledge for the 2027 class. The wing chose the Tar Heels after considering Arkansas, Kentucky and Louisville. Those three programs sit in the preseason AP Top 25, while North Carolina received votes but is unranked. Henry's decision is a substantial recruiting result for a coach who has yet to begin his first regular season in Chapel Hill.

The recruiting lists disagree on Henry's exact place. SCNext calls him No. 2 in its 2027 ranking. 247Sports places him fourth and first among small forwards. Both put him near the top of the national class. CBS Sports also identifies him as the program's first 2027 commitment.

A first pledge with room around it

Malone arrived in April after a long NBA coaching career. Henry's choice gives his staff a recruiting win against established college programs. The rest of North Carolina's class is still to be built, and its current team has an entire 2026-27 season ahead of it.

CBR's dated Henry profile describes a left-handed wing at AZ Compass Prep and records the earlier recruiting-board context. North Carolina now has his commitment. His senior season and the rest of Malone's recruiting work will provide more useful clues about his eventual college role.

Henry gives UNC a starting point that other 2027 prospects can see. The next evidence is who joins him and what Henry shows during his senior season.
