Asa Montgomery committed to Duke this week, giving Jon Scheyer a third known commitment for 2027. Hillgrove High School reported the decision on October 30. Montgomery is a senior there, and his college arrival is still a year away. For No. 2 Duke, the immediate gain is a more complete future class, rather than an answer about next season's lineup.
The other two commitments help explain the shape of that class. Luke Paul committed as a guard after joining the Cairns Taipans, while Kager Knueppel is a forward. CBS Sports identified Montgomery as the third member on October 28. Duke has now secured players with different listed positions. How they will share the floor in 2027-28 remains a question for another year.
What Montgomery changes
Montgomery's commitment gives Duke another forward-sized option in a class that already had a guard and a forward. He also gives the program a recruit with a documented scoring record. CBR's September profile details his summer production and the variation between recruiting services' measurements. Those numbers are useful context for the kind of player Duke recruited. They are not a college role assignment.
The next useful evidence will come from Hillgrove's season and from the way Paul's first professional season develops. Duke can learn more about Montgomery's shot selection, rebounding and defensive assignments against high school opponents. Paul's NBL minutes can clarify what he brings to a college backcourt. Neither sample exists in full today, so a projected 2027 starting five would be guesswork.
There is also a timing point. Duke is preparing for the 2026-27 season now. Montgomery, Paul and Knueppel belong to the following recruiting class. A current roster vacancy says little about where any one of them will play after another season of transfers and departures.
Montgomery's decision settles one important question for Duke: it has its third 2027 commitment. The basketball question now moves to how his senior season and the other recruits' development fit together. That is a better way to follow this class than assigning minutes a year early.
