Duke adds Luke Paul for 2027 after Cairns season

Luke Paul has committed to Duke for 2027-28, after he finishes this season with the Cairns Taipans. That timing is the useful part of the announcement for Duke. The Blue Devils know where the Australian guard intends to play college basketball, but his first NBL season still lies ahead of him.

Paul, 17, has yet to make his Cairns debut after a preseason ankle injury. The Taipans said October 3 he would miss that night's game and was expected to debut October 8. The NBL's announcement confirms he will join Duke after its 2026-27 season.

What Duke can already see

There is a real record before Cairns. In seven games at the 2026 FIBA Under-17 World Cup, Paul averaged 15.3 points, 7.1 assists and 4.7 turnovers. Australia won bronze, and FIBA named him to the tournament's All-Star Five. Those numbers show a young guard carrying a substantial playmaking load against his age group. They do not tell us how he will handle NBL defenders or which college position will suit him best.

That makes the Cairns season more useful than an early depth-chart guess. Paul can show how often he gets the ball, what decisions he makes under pressure and whether he can stay effective when older opponents take away his first option. Minutes and role will matter as much as a highlight. The ankle injury means there is no NBL game sample to judge yet.

The distinction also keeps this future commitment separate from Duke's current roster. Paul's commitment concerns 2027-28, while the current Blue Devils are preparing for 2026-27. Future roster spots and guard minutes can change before he arrives. A recruiting announcement alone cannot assign him a role in a lineup that does not exist yet.

The next evidence

Paul told ESPN he wants to play alongside fellow future Duke recruit Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje. That is a sensible basketball idea from a guard who averaged more than seven assists at the Under-17 World Cup. How the two might share a college floor remains a projection until both reach Durham.

For now, Duke has Paul's commitment and his junior international results. Cairns expects his debut October 8. His subsequent minutes and health will give the next, more relevant evidence for a discussion of his 2027-28 job.
