Xavier Young told ESPN he has committed to LSU and plans to move from the 2028 recruiting class into 2027. ESPN lists him as a five-star center. That gives Will Wade a fourth 2027 commitment, days after guard Reese Alston chose the Tigers.
The timing matters. Young's decision concerns a future class, so it does not change LSU's lineup for the season about to begin. It does give Wade another frontcourt commitment in a group that already had two highly rated guards.
LSU's class now has a different shape
Alston joined King Gibson and Ahmad Hudson earlier this week. Alston is listed as a point guard and Gibson as a combo guard. Hudson, a forward, also has football in his plans. Young adds a center to that group after deciding to graduate a year earlier than previously expected.
That is a useful change to the class on paper. Two guard pledges and two frontcourt pledges give LSU more positional range than the guard-heavy picture it had after Alston's commitment. It would be too early to turn those four names into a college rotation. Their final high school seasons, the rest of Wade's recruiting and the 2027 roster will determine who actually plays together.
The rankings also need a date and an owner. SCNext called Young No. 9 in its 2028 list when reporting his commitment. ESPN said he will retain five-star status when he enters its 2027 ranking. ESPN now calls LSU's 2027 class No. 1 nationally. Those are ESPN's evaluations at this moment, and the class order can change as other programs add players.
Young told ESPN he looks forward to playing with Gibson and Alston. That is a recruit's expectation, not a promise about a 2027 lineup. For LSU, the immediate news is simpler: a center who had been counted in 2028 is now part of Wade's 2027 recruiting plan. The next useful evidence will come from Young's last school season and from the roster LSU builds around that class.
