Zion Green has committed to Alabama, giving Nate Oats a second 2027 recruit alongside Chase Lumpkin. ESPN reported Green's decision on Saturday after speaking with him. Rivals also reported the commitment. The pair gives Alabama two different pieces to evaluate before either has played a college game.
Green is a 6-foot-9 forward at AZ Compass Prep. ESPN currently ranks him No. 16 in its 2027 class and describes a player who can rebound and bring the ball forward. That is ESPN's evaluation. We have not reviewed film to make our own claim about how often he does it. The more useful question for Alabama is what those skills might create next to a guard who also likes to attack.
Two ways to start an advantage
Lumpkin chose Alabama in September. In that report, On The Radar Hoops described a guard who can advance the ball in transition, create a shot and find a teammate. Green's reported rebounding and ball movement would offer another way to begin a possession. If a forward secures a rebound and pushes before the defense is set, the guard can run into space instead of coming back to collect the ball. If Lumpkin has it, Green can be available ahead of him or fill a different lane.
Those are possible uses of the reported skills, not an account of the two playing together. There is no college film of this pairing and no 2027-28 depth chart. Their senior seasons, Alabama's eventual roster and Oats' choices will decide whether those possibilities become real possessions.
The new commitment also changes the shape of the recruiting class. Alabama now has a forward and a guard in the group, according to the two commitment reports. That does not establish a complete class or a fixed role for either prospect. It gives the staff more than one kind of player to develop toward the same offense. Watch how Green handles the ball after a rebound and how Lumpkin responds when another player starts the break. That interaction is more informative than treating two commitments as a finished lineup.
Alabama is No. 20 in ESPN's current preseason AP poll. That number concerns this season's team. Green and Lumpkin belong to the 2027 class, so the poll cannot tell us how their future partnership will work.
