Asa Montgomery climbed 34 places in CBR's latest 2027 rankings, moving from No. 44 to No. 10. The Hillgrove small forward made the largest jump among players who appeared on both the August 21 and September 5 boards.
Beckham Black and C.J. Rosser still occupy the first two spots. Montgomery is the change worth spending time on.
Montgomery's summer has substance behind it
In an August 28 report for Rivals, Joe Tipton credited Montgomery with 27.9 points and 10.2 rebounds per game for AOT on the Nike EYCL circuit. Tipton reported that Montgomery led the circuit in scoring.
The rebounding matters alongside that scoring figure. A wing producing in both categories gives readers something concrete to weigh when his ranking changes. The attention has a basketball basis beyond a list of schools pursuing him.
That same report included Jamie Shaw's evaluation from July. The Rivals analyst described Montgomery creating advantages with his handle, making threes off the catch and dribble, and finishing above the rim. Those are Shaw's observations. They help explain the interest in a forward whose offensive role can extend beyond finishing somebody else's play.
The next question is how that production and role hold up through the coming school season. A September ranking gives Montgomery a new position to defend.
Eight of the top ten stayed in the group

The updated CBR Top 25 retained eight players from the previous top ten. NaVorro Bowman Jr., now No. 9, and Montgomery are the two additions. Nasir Anderson and King Gibson moved outside that group.
That makes the change at the bottom of the top ten more interesting than a wholesale reshuffle would be. Black and Rosser remained first and second. Cayden Daughtry moved from sixth to third. Montgomery entered a group that otherwise kept most of its members.

Whyte and Wise are worth tracking beyond the top-ten headlines. Both moved from the bottom twenty of the previous board into the current top sixty. Awaka and Santos crossed into the top fifty.
Those moves give the next update several useful tests. Can Montgomery remain in the top ten? Do Whyte and Wise continue climbing? Do Awaka and Santos establish themselves in the top half? Follow the players across editions rather than treating one revised number as the end of the evaluation.
The call
I'd put Montgomery first on the list of players to revisit this season. His move is the largest among the returning names, and the reported summer production gives that rise context. The next step is seeing whether he can sustain that level through the school season.
