Mississippi State has added an October 18 exhibition against NC State in Greensboro. That gives Chris Jans three preseason games in fourteen days, with Florida State first and Memphis last.
Three exhibitions can turn into three versions of the same audition. State will get more from the schedule if each game answers a different question.
The Greensboro Complex lists the NC State game for 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 18, at First Horizon Coliseum. The venue describes it as Justin Gainey's first public appearance as NC State's head coach and points to Josh Hubbard as Mississippi State's returning attraction.
State's official schedule also lists an October 10 exhibition against Florida State in Pensacola and an October 23 exhibition against Memphis in Starkville. The opener and the NC State game are at neutral sites. The Memphis game brings the Bulldogs home five days later.
Florida State can test the first plan
The first exhibition should reveal what Mississippi State believes before an opponent has supplied much new film. Which lineup opens? Who organizes the first half-court possession? Which two players handle an early ball screen?
Those choices do not have to survive the whole month. They give the next two games something to challenge.
Hubbard is the obvious starting point. His official Mississippi State biography credits him with 22.1 points per game last season. The more useful October question concerns the next action. When a second defender moves toward Hubbard, does the ball reach an advantage before the defense can recover?
That sequence can be tracked without pretending an exhibition score settles anything. Count the possessions in which the first pass away from pressure produces a paint touch, an open shot or another forced rotation. Then count the possessions that simply return the ball to Hubbard with less time on the clock.
NC State changes the setting
The Greensboro game comes eight days later and gives both teams a neutral floor. It also gives NC State its first public look under Gainey, according to the venue. That makes the opponent harder to reduce to last season's habits.
State should use the uncertainty. A scouting plan always begins with available personnel and evidence, but a new staff can change where that evidence points. The Bulldogs will have to recognize what NC State is doing in the game and adjust without a full regular-season preparation cycle.
I would watch the first answer after halftime. If NC State changes how it guards Hubbard or the first ball screen, does Mississippi State keep forcing the opening plan? A clean adjustment would tell us more about the Bulldogs' readiness than a polished first five minutes.
There is a limit to that judgment. We do not know how much either staff will reveal in a preseason game, and coaches may use combinations that never appear in November. The evaluation belongs to the decisions we can see, not to a guessed master plan.
Memphis asks whether the correction held
Five days after Greensboro, State hosts Memphis. The Bulldogs will have two games of public evidence and a short interval to decide what deserves another look.
That is where the third exhibition earns its place. If the same turnover or rebounding problem appears against Florida State and NC State, Memphis provides a quick check on the response. Did the responsibility change? Did the timing improve? Did Jans use a different combination to solve it?
