Michigan loses rebounding battle in Houston exhibition defeat

No. 16 Michigan lost 83-66 to No. 10 Houston in Sunday's exhibition finale. Houston won the rebounds 42-30 and the paint points 26-14. Those two gaps give the Wolverines a concrete problem to carry into the regular season, even though the rebound total alone does not explain every point of the loss.

Michigan briefly took a 29-25 lead with a 15-1 first-half run. Houston answered with 13 straight points. The Michigan game report says the Wolverines cut the deficit to two early in the second half, then trailed by 16 with 11 minutes left. They produced stretches of offense against a top-10 opponent. They had trouble sustaining those stretches while Houston kept finding shots and boards.

The official box score sharpens that point. Houston attempted 64 field goals to Michigan's 50. The Cougars shot 43.8 percent and Michigan 34 percent. Michigan made 23 free throws to Houston's 20, so the difference was not simply a failure to get to the line. Michigan needed more finished possessions and more made shots from the opportunities it had.

I would be careful about assigning all 14 extra Houston attempts to rebounding. The teams were nearly even in second-chance points, nine for Houston and eight for Michigan. Houston also committed eight turnovers to Michigan's 11. The box gives several pieces of the possession gap, not a film diagnosis of where every chance began. The rebound edge still matters. A team cannot turn a defensive stop into its own possession until it secures the ball, and Michigan came away with 12 fewer boards overall.

Roddy Gayle Jr. led Michigan with 14 points in his first appearance after being cleared for a fifth season, according to Michigan Athletics. Moustapha Thiam scored 12 and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Their contributions are worth keeping beside the loss. One player pulling eight boards does not erase a team-wide 42-30 gap, and a returner's scoring does not resolve a 14-point paint deficit.

CBR's preview asked whether Houston could score without relying on turnover points from its opener. Sunday's result offers a measured answer: the Cougars scored 83 while gaining 20 points off turnovers, nine second-chance points and a 26-14 paint edge. For Michigan, the next question is whether it can narrow the possession and interior gaps before its November 2 opener against Oakland. This exhibition does not count in the standings, but the box gives that question a number to test.
