No. 12 Arkansas beat No. 15 Gonzaga 76-72 in Saturday's exhibition, but the result alone hides the part Arkansas most needs to carry into the season. The Razorbacks committed 10 turnovers before halftime and only two afterward. That change gave their offense enough possessions to recover from a 10-point first-half deficit.
Arkansas's game report also credits the team with eight second-half assists. Billy Richmond III scored 17 points, 12 after halftime. Freshman Davion Thompson finished with 12 and made a late three after Gonzaga had cut Arkansas's lead to five. The guards made the comeback more than a matter of simply holding onto the ball. They turned that extra care into scores.
The other half of the comeback
Ball security is an appealing explanation, but it cannot carry the whole game. Gonzaga's recap and box score show Arkansas made 11 of 24 threes while Gonzaga made six of 28. The five-make difference mattered in a four-point game. Arkansas had ways to score away from the basket when the Bulldogs held the stronger interior numbers.
Gonzaga won the rebound count 52-47, second-chance points 17-11 and paint points 36-22. That is a substantial warning inside an encouraging Arkansas result. Cleaner second-half possessions and better outside shooting overcame those gaps for one afternoon. They did not remove them. A team that gives up extra chances near the rim cannot count on a five-three advantage in every close game.
This was a different examination from CBR's Kentucky-Texas Tech report, where the central issue was how Kentucky answered after a late tie. Arkansas had to change its possession quality over a full half while Gonzaga kept winning work around the basket. The question for the Razorbacks now is whether their guards can sustain that second-half decision-making when the threes are less generous.
The October 19 AP poll puts both programs in the national preseason Top 25. This exhibition will not count in either team's record. It does supply a concrete early comparison: Arkansas protected the ball well enough to use its perimeter advantage, while Gonzaga showed that it can still create pressure through rebounding and the paint.
