Arkansas lists eight freshmen on its current 2026-27 men's basketball roster. Auburn lists one, guard Caleb Williams. Both are established NCAA Division I programs in the SEC, but the first-year players enter very different roster competitions. The number beside a class year tells us who is available. It says nothing yet about who plays regularly.
Arkansas's July quick facts projected nine freshmen. The current roster lists eight as freshmen and Paulo Semedo as a sophomore, so eight is the usable count today. At guard, Jordan Smith Jr. and Davion Thompson arrive alongside junior transfer Jeremiah Wilkinson and returning junior Billy Richmond III. On the wing, JJ Andrews and Abdou Toure share a roster with sophomore Isaiah Sealy. Arkansas can test several young players in the same broad areas of the floor. It will also have to decide which combinations work together.
Auburn's single freshman still has a crowded job
Williams is Auburn's lone listed freshman. The Tigers' current roster also includes junior guard Tahaad Pettiford, senior guard Kevin Overton, senior George Kimble III and fifth-year guard Kolby King. Williams will not compete with another freshman for a guard spot. He still has to earn a role alongside older players. That is a tougher sentence than “lone freshman” might suggest.
There is some August evidence, with a firm limit. Williams scored 12 points in Auburn's first exhibition against KK Mega Superbet. Steven Pearl said four core players were absent. In the second game, Pettiford played only the first quarter and Overton sat the final 17 minutes. Auburn's account says Williams took the final shot in a two-point loss. Those games gave him competitive possessions. They did not show how Pearl will divide guard minutes when the full group is available.
The next evidence is in the rotation
Arkansas has a different question. Eight freshmen offer John Calipari more ways to form a young group, but a long list of names is not a rotation. CBR recently covered Miikka Muurinen's eligibility clearance and the choices it opens in the frontcourt. The broader freshman question runs through the guards and wings too. Which first-year players can stay on the floor together when Arkansas needs ball handling, spacing and stops in the same lineup?
Arkansas's September 17 schedule release lists exhibitions against Gonzaga on October 24 and Memphis on October 28 before a November 3 opener. Those games should give the first public look at Calipari's combinations against college opponents. Auburn's August games supply an early look at Williams, with the absences attached. Watch whether Arkansas pairs Smith Jr. with Thompson and whether Auburn uses Williams beside Pettiford and Overton when its guard group is available.
