Arkansas gains frontcourt flexibility after Muurinen clearance

Miikka Muurinen can play for Arkansas in 2026-27. John Calipari announced the eligibility clearance Thursday, according to ESPN, ending a question that followed the Finnish forward from his stint with Partizan Belgrade to Fayetteville.

The decision lets Calipari use his whole frontcourt when practice and games begin. It does not pick a position, a starting five or a minute total for him.

Arkansas already has size

Arkansas lists Muurinen as a 7-foot freshman wing/forward on its current roster. The same roster has five players listed at 6-foot-11 or taller in forward/center spots: Maper Maker, Ilia Frolov, Caleb Ourigou, Cooper Bowser and Paulo Semedo. Muurinen's clearance adds another way to arrange an already tall group.

Calipari offered a more useful description than a position label. In the video reported by ESPN, he said Muurinen can play outside and inside, while acknowledging that the player prefers the outside. He also cautioned that the 19-year-old has a long way to go. That is a coach describing a range of possible jobs, with a reminder that each still has to be earned.

The roster makes the first basketball question specific. Can Arkansas pair Muurinen with one of its listed centers without giving up what it needs on defense? That is a question for games and actual possessions. Neither a roster measurement nor an eligibility decision answers it. If Calipari uses him as the largest player in a group, the defensive and rebounding demands change again. We have not seen those combinations play a college game.

Clearance changes the choice, not the evaluation

Arkansas announced Muurinen's signing in May and identified KK Partizan as his previous team. The school also recorded his 10 points, eight rebounds and two steals for Team World at the 2026 Nike Hoop Summit. Those are useful facts about his background. One all-star game cannot establish how he will handle an SEC frontcourt across a season.

The NCAA adopted changes to Division I preenrollment rules in April for prospects entering during 2026-27. Its public announcement does not give the case file behind Muurinen's individual clearance. ESPN reported the clearance, and an Arkansas spokesperson separately confirmed it to the Fort Smith Southwest Times Record. We can say he is eligible. We cannot say which rule decided his case.

CBS Sports ranks Arkansas No. 10 in its September 24 preseason Top 25 And 1. That expectation puts attention on Calipari's frontcourt choices before the opener. Arkansas now has Muurinen available alongside its other bigs. His first college games will show which pairings can defend and rebound well enough to stay on the floor.
