SportsCenter NEXT reported Wednesday that IMG Academy guard Lucai Anderson told ESPN's Paul Biancardi he had committed to Michigan. ESPN lists Anderson at No. 75 in its 2027 player ranking. The school had not announced the pledge when this article was prepared, so ESPN's report is the source for his decision.
The class year is important here. Anderson is a high school senior preparing for 2027, while coach Mike Boynton Jr. is about to begin the 2026-27 college season. A commitment gives Boynton a recruiting piece for a later roster. It says nothing yet about the rotation Michigan will use against Oregon State on Friday or in its November opener.
A guard enters the next class
Boynton became Michigan's head coach in July after two seasons on its staff. Anderson's decision, if it holds through signing, is an early marker of how his staff is building beyond the current team. CBR's Anderson profile places him at IMG Academy and records him at No. 82 on its October 3 class board. ESPN's No. 75 is a separate outlet ranking. Neither number tells us his future college role.
The available reporting describes a guard with scoring production before he moved to IMG. On3 reported that Anderson averaged 21.3 points and 4.8 rebounds at Trinity Christian in Lubbock. That is useful background, but it comes from a different school and setting. There is no basis yet to project the same output against Big Ten defenders.
Michigan's next recruiting decisions will give this pledge more meaning. The staff could add another ballhandler, a wing or frontcourt size to the 2027 group. Anderson supplies a guard name now. The shape of the class, and his place in it, remain open.
