Kansas allows nine second-half threes in Louisville exhibition loss

Kansas led Louisville by one at halftime, then watched the Cardinals make nine of 14 three-pointers in the second half. No. 17 Kansas lost the October 21 exhibition 89-83 to No. 11 Louisville. The result gives the Jayhawks a specific question before their next exhibition with No. 2 Duke: can they keep their advantages near the basket while limiting the damage from outside?

The official box score makes the tradeoff hard to miss. Kansas outscored Louisville 40-20 in the paint and 26-8 on fast breaks. The teams finished even at 42 rebounds, and Kansas committed only nine turnovers. Those are useful possessions, especially against a ranked opponent. Louisville still made 14 threes to Kansas' seven. That 21-point difference from behind the arc outweighed a great deal of what Kansas gained inside.

Louisville's surge started immediately after halftime. The Cardinals' account says Adrian Wooley hit consecutive threes, then Álvaro Folgueiras added another. Kansas kept the score close enough for Tyran Stokes to cut the deficit to two late, according to Kansas' recap. Tre White scored 25 and Melvin Council Jr. added 20. Their production is evidence that the Jayhawks could answer at the other end. It did not erase Louisville's outside scoring.

The box does not show whether those threes came from missed assignments, difficult makes or a mixture. Calling for one player's minutes to disappear would pretend we have a film answer that we do not. Kansas can instead take a narrower test into Sunday: defend the perimeter well enough that its paint scoring and transition chances matter on the final line.

CBR's earlier Kansas frontcourt look considered the addition of Trey Kaufman-Renn before this game. The Louisville result supplies a new measure for the whole team. Kansas says it hosts No. 2 Duke on October 25 in another exhibition. A second ranked opponent can test whether the three-point gap was one hot half or a problem Kansas has yet to solve.
