I counted, so you do not have to. At least 33 of the 100 players on our class of 2027 board play for 13 national academy programs. Bella Vista Prep alone has four. Southeastern Prep, AZ Compass, Prolific Prep, SPIRE, and IMG have three each. The 100 best players in the country attend 76 different schools, and thirteen of those schools supply a third of the list.
Your state championship stopped being the road to a scholarship a while ago, and most of the adults in your gym have not told you.
The old map
The story we all grew up with goes like this. Star at your local high school, win the district, make a run in March, and the college coaches in the stands find you. That map worked when coaches drove to games. Now they watch film on a phone between practices, and the film they watch first comes from the gyms where ranked players play each other every weekend.
That is the academy circuit. Montverde against IMG is a scouting event. Your rivalry game is not, and it is nobody's fault.
What it costs to ignore it
The same question comes up over and over. You averaged 24 in a state with zero players on our board. Why is nobody calling? The phone call depends on the comparison, and the comparison is happening somewhere you are not.
Look at Wisconsin. Five ranked players, every one committed already. Two of them, Dooney Johnson and Kager Knueppel, did it from traditional Wisconsin high schools. It can be done. But it happened because their film traveled to the right people early, not because the state tournament worked its magic.
Geography is not a plan
I am not telling you to ship your kid to Arizona. Most of those academy rosters are full of players who were already ranked before they enrolled. The circuit amplifies talent. It does not manufacture it.
What I am telling you is to stop outsourcing your recruitment to geography. If you play in a state with a thin board, your film has to do the traveling. Find the coach who runs recruiting at twenty schools that fit you, send the clips, and follow up. That is the entire roadmap, and it is free.
